Have you ever noticed that spoken words have their own musical beat?
Every word we speak is made of sound chunks called syllables.
A syllable is a single beat of a spoken word, like a tap on a drum.

How can you easily count the beats in any word you say?
The Clapping Trick
Say a word slowly and clap your hands every time you hear a new sound part.
When you say the word dog, your mouth makes one sound burst, so you clap 1 time.
Now say wa-ter: you clap two times because wa-ter has 2 syllables.

Can words have even more beats than two?
Counting Longer Words
Big words are just smaller syllable beats joined together in a line.
