Imagine you have 7 delicious strawberries on your plate. You eat 2 of them right up!
How many strawberries do you have left? You can find out using just your fingers!
By connecting concrete stories (like 5 frogs where 2 hop away) to our fingers, we can easily write the math sentence 5โ2=3.
By connecting concrete math stories (like 7 strawberries or 5 jumping frogs) to symbols, we can write the number sentence 7โ2=5.
Counting Back Like a Rocket
When we subtract, we take away. We start at the big number and count back like a rocket launch: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, blastoff!

How do we do this? We use our fingers as a tracking tool to count each backward step rather than showing the entire group.
Take Away 1
Let's solve 6โ1. Lock the starting number 6 in your head before counting back.
Now put up 1 finger and say the next number backwards: "5". So, 6โ1=5!

What if we need to take away 2 or 3?
