A micro-habitat is a very small, specific area within a larger habitat where particular plants and animals live. In a pond, water depth, light, and plants create four distinct micro-habitats.

How do scientists explore these miniature worlds without disturbing the whole pond? They use a gentle sampling method called pond dipping.
Pond Dipping
Pond dipping is a scientific technique where you sweep a fine mesh net through the water to gently collect small animals. Before sweeping, you must always fill a white sorting tray with fresh pond water so your catch has a safe place to swim.
To catch creatures hiding among stems, sweep your net in a smooth figure-of-eight motion near the weeds. This gently swirls the water and lifts small critters straight into your net without damaging the plants.

Once your catch is resting in the tray, many critters look like tiny brown specks. How can you get a super close-up view of their legs, gills, and eyes?
Hand Lenses and Pipettes
A hand lens magnifies fine anatomical features of tiny pond creatures. For proper observation, hold the lens close to your eye and bring the specimen container closer until the image is in sharp focus.
