Imagine you have one giant, warm chocolate chip cookie to share. Would you get a bigger piece if you share it with just 1 friend, or with 7 friends?
When you cut a shape into equal parts, every single piece must be the exact same size.

The more cuts you make, the more pieces you create β but each piece gets smaller and smaller!
What happens when we write down these special slice sizes using math numbers?
Naming the Slices
A unit fraction is just one single slice out of the whole group of equal parts.
In a fraction like 41β, the bottom number tells us the total number of equal slices we cut.

It feels tricky at first because 8 is bigger than 2. But remember: more cuts mean each person gets a much smaller share!
So 21β of a cookie is much bigger than 81β of the same cookie.
Next time you share a treat, count the friends first β the more friends at the table, the smaller each yummy bite will be!
