Imagine standing at the bottom of a tall slide looking up. A right-angled triangle is formed by the ladder, the ground, and the slide itself.
To solve puzzles with these triangles, we give each of the three sides a specific name: the hypotenuse, the opposite side, and the adjacent side.
Finding the Hypotenuse
First, find the square box in the corner marking the 90โ right angle. The hypotenuse is always the longest side, sitting directly across from this square box.

The hypotenuse is always fixed, but what about the other two sides? Their names depend entirely on which corner you stand in!
Opposite and Adjacent Sides
Pick the corner angle you want to work with, called the reference angle (often shown as ฮธ, the Greek letter theta). The side straight across the triangle that does not touch this angle is the opposite side.
The side running right alongside your angle, connecting it directly to the 90โ corner, is the adjacent side (adjacent simply means 'next to').

Switching Your Viewpoint
The hypotenuse never changes because the 90โ corner never moves. However, switching your reference angle swaps the opposite and adjacent sides.
