What happens if you paint one wing of a butterfly on paper, fold it in half, and open it up?
Both sides look exactly the same! The fold down the middle is called a line of symmetry or a mirror line.
๐Interactive diagram
Can we fold shapes in different directions to find new mirror lines?
Up and Down: Vertical Lines
A vertical line goes straight up and down like a standing tree.
When you fold a shape along a vertical line, the left side lands right on top of the right side.
๐Interactive diagram
What if we fold a shape across from side to side instead?
Side to Side: Horizontal Lines
A horizontal line goes straight across from left to right, like the flat ground or the edge of a table.
When you fold along a horizontal line, the top half folds down to match the bottom half.
