The Illusion of the Phantom Centre
A phantom centre occurs when identical audio signals play simultaneously out of the left and right speakers at equal amplitude and phase. In the 1930s, British engineer Alan Blumlein patented stereo recording after realizing the human brain interprets equal binaural sound as coming from directly in front of the listener.
