Imagine you earn 10 crisp dollar bills for walking your neighbor's dog. But when you look in your wallet, you only get to keep 8 dollars!
Where did those 2 missing dollars go, and why didn't you keep all 10?
What do we call the total pile of money you earned before anything disappears?
Gross Pay: The Whole Pile
Gross pay is the total amount of money you earn from a job before any money is taken away.

So why can't you always take that whole pile of money home?
Deductions: The Slices Taken Out
Deductions are portions taken away from total earnings for contributions such as taxes, community services, or savings pots (extDeductions=extAmountTakenOut).
Taxes are shared money that helps build neighborhood playgrounds, fix roads, and support firefighters.
If 2 dollars are taken out of your 10 dollars for taxes, those 2 dollars are your deductions.
Once those deductions are taken away, what happens to the money that is left over?
