If you leave a scoop of ice cream outside on a sunny afternoon, it quickly turns into a sweet, gooey puddle.
The solid ice cream changed into a liquid because it took in heat from the warm air around it.
What is happening deep inside the solid to make it lose its shape and flow?
From Solid to Liquid
Melting is the change of state from a solid into a liquid when thermal energy (heat) is added.
All matter is made of tiny building blocks called particles that are always moving.

In a solid, particles are locked in neat rows and can only vibrate in place. Adding heat makes them jiggle so fast that they break free and roll past one another.
Do all solids turn into liquids at the exact same temperature?
The Melting Point
The exact temperature where a solid turns into a liquid is called its melting point.
Water has a melting point of 0โC (32โF). As long as ice is colder than 0โC, it stays solid, but the moment it warms past that mark, it begins to melt.
