Imagine a frog that always jumps 3 steps forward on a number line.
On jump 1 it lands on 3, on jump 2 it lands on 6, and on jump 3 it lands on 9.

The amount added between each number is called the common difference.
Since every hop adds 3, these numbers are just the 3 times table: 3,6,9,12.

Using the Letter n
In math, we use the letter n to stand for the position number of any step.
Writing 3n means '3 times n', which gives the value at position n.
