Imagine you have 8 yummy cookies and want to share half of them with your best friend. How many cookies does your friend get?
A fraction tells us about equal parts, where the bottom number tells us how many equal groups to make.
๐Interactive diagram
To find 21โ of 8, we share 8 cookies into 2 equal groups, giving 4 cookies in each group.
What if we want to share 12 toy cars into 4 equal boxes instead?
Finding One Fourth
To find 41โ of 12, divide 12 into 4 equal groups.
๐Interactive diagram
Each box holds 3 cars, so 41โ of 12 is 3.
Now, what happens if you get to keep 3 of those boxes instead of just 1?
Taking More Groups
When the top number is bigger than 1, like in 43โ, we multiply the size of one group by the top number.
