What happens when you zoom in on a photo using a phone screen?
The picture grows bigger, but every corner stays in the exact same matching shape!
The Center Dot at (0,0)
On a math grid, the very center point (0,0) is called the origin.
Every spot on the grid is measured by counting steps right and steps up from (0,0).
๐Interactive diagram
What if we want to make a tiny shape two times as big?
Growing by a Scale Factor
To double a shape, we multiply each corner's grid steps from (0,0) by 2.
The number we multiply by is called the scale factor.
๐Interactive diagram
Let's check the corner (1,1): multiplying both numbers by 2 gives (2,2).
The corner (3,1) becomes (6,2), making the new shape twice as wide and twice as tall.
