What happens when you cut a rectangular sandwich diagonally from corner to corner?
You get two matching triangles with a neat, square corner called a right angle.
📊Interactive diagram
How do we find out how much space is inside one of those triangles?
The Rectangle Secret
Area is the total number of square units that fit inside a flat shape.
For any rectangle, we find the area by multiplying its bottom edge (base) by its straight up-and-down edge (height).
📊Interactive diagram
Since two identical right triangles make the whole rectangle, one triangle must be exactly half of that rectangle.
That is why the area formula for a right triangle is Area=21×base×height.

What does this look like with real measurements?
