What happens when you zoom in on a picture on your phone? The picture gets bigger, but the shapes do not look squished or weird.
In math, when two shapes have the exact same shape but different sizes, we call them similar figures.

How do we know for sure if two shapes are truly similar?
Rule 1: Matching Corners
Every shape has corners called angles. In similar shapes, every corner on the small shape has the exact same angle as the corner on the big shape.
๐Interactive diagram
Even though the big triangle has longer sides, its corners are not wider or sharper โ they open up the exact same amount.
What about the straight edges of the shapes?
Rule 2: Growing by the Same Multiplier
When a shape grows into a similar shape, every side grows by multiplying by the exact same number.
If you double one side, you must double every other side too! We say the sides are in proportion.
