Imagine you have a shiny juice box that costs 1.40andanapplethatcosts0.50. How do you find the total price without getting mixed up?
The little dot between the numbers is called a decimal point, and it separates whole dollars from parts of a dollar.

So how do we add two decimal numbers together when they have the same number of digits after the dot?
Line Up the Dots
The golden rule is column addition: write the numbers on top of each other so their decimal points make a straight vertical line.
Once your dots are lined up, add the digits from right to left just like regular numbers, and bring the dot straight down into your answer.

That was smooth! But what should you do if the numbers in one column add up to 10 or more?
Regrouping Across the Dot
When a column makes 10 or more, you regroup by carrying the extra ten to the next column on the left.
Let's add 3.7+2.5. In the tenths place, 7+5=12 tenths, which is 1 whole and 2 tenths.
