Imagine opening your piggy bank and spilling out a neat line of shiny nickels! How do you find the total amount of money without adding one by one?
Skip Counting Same Coins
When every coin in a group is identical, you can skip count by that coin's value to find the total quickly.
Each nickel is worth 5 cents, so count up by 5 for every coin you see.
πInteractive/animated horizontal strip of 4 nickel coins (silver circles with '5Β’' inside). An animated bouncing pointer hops from coin 1 to coin 4. Under each coin, a number tag pops up in sync: '5Β’', '10Β’', '15Β’', '20Β’'. At the bottom, a large bright card shows: 'Total = 20Β’'. Clean white background (#ffffff), dark blue text (#1e2945), soft rounded borders (#e6e6e6).
To write the answer, write the final number and place the cent symbol right after it: 20Β’.
What happens if the coins in your group are smaller, but worth even more?
Counting Groups of Dimes
A dime is worth 10 cents, which means we skip count by tens for each dime.
Let's count a group of 3 dimes: 10, 20, 30!
πVisual diagram showing 3 small silver coins labeled '10Β’'. Above the coins, curved hop arrows labeled '+10Β’' connect each coin. Below the coins, running counts display '10Β’', '20Β’', and '30Β’'. A final result bubble on the right clearly highlights '30Β’'. Clean, bold, high-contrast primary colors.
We write the total value as 30Β’.
Watch out for a common mix-up: having 3 dimes does not mean you have 3Β’! The number 3 counts the coins, but each coin is worth 10, giving you 30Β’.
