Imagine you have one cute dog wagging its tail, but suddenly three more run into the yard! How do we change the word dog to tell our friends that we see more than one?
One or More Than One
A noun is a naming word for a person, place, or thing, like a cat, a hat, or a toy.
When we have just one item, the word is singular. When we have two, three, or a million items, the word is plural.

So how do we turn a singular noun into a plural noun with our pencils? Let's check out the rule.
Adding -s to the End
For most naming words, you simply add the letter -s to the end of the base word.
The base word is the original word before we attach anything new to it, like book.

What happens if we look closely at how words change in real sentences? Let's try some practice.
Building Plural Words
If you see one duck swimming, you write duck. If five ducks swim past, you snap the -s right to the end to write ducks.
