Imagine playing tag at recess, but one player suddenly shouts, "I have an invisible forcefield, so you can never tag me!"
Without agreed-upon rules, a fun match quickly turns into an argument where nobody wants to play anymore.
So what gives every game its structure?

The Three Jobs of Rules

In any game, rules are clear instructions that every player agrees to follow before starting.
Rules do three essential jobs: they keep the game fair, protect players so they stay safe, and make sure the game stays fun for everyone.
Let's look at what happens when everyone plays by the exact same conditions.

Making the Game Fair

A game has fair play when every single participant follows the exact same boundaries, scoring methods, and turn orders.
In Four Square, for example, the ball must bounce once inside your square before you hit it to another player.
If one player decided they could hold the ball and run with it, they would gain an unfair advantage, which breaks the balance of the whole game.
