Imagine swinging a ball tied to a string around in a circle. If the string suddenly snaps, the ball instantly shoots off into the grass.
Earth and everything around us in space are doing that exact same circle right now around the Sun โ except our string is completely invisible!
So what is this giant space neighborhood, and what is keeping all of us from flying away?
The Solar System
The solar system is our Sun and every single object in space that circles around it.
Any natural object out in space โ such as a star, a planet, a moon, or a rock โ is called a celestial body.

The Invisible Glue: Gravity
In 1687, scientist Isaac Newton realized that all objects in the universe pull toward each other with an invisible pulling force called gravity.
The heavier an object is, the stronger it pulls. Because our Sun is heavier than everything else combined, it pulls on everything around it.

Because the Sun's gravity holds them and stops them from escaping, scientists say these objects are gravitationally bound to the Sun.
