You are sprinting across the grass in a game of tag, and a tagger is charging right at you. If you keep running in a straight line, you will get tagged every single time.
To escape, you need to dodgeβ€”a sudden change of direction and speed that leaves the chaser running after empty air.
Notice how a sharp dodge lets you escape instantly, while a slow curve gives the tagger time to catch you.
How do your legs pull off such a lightning-fast turn without slipping or losing balance?

The Three Steps of a Dodge

First, drop your hips and bend your knees. Lowering your body keeps you steady so you do not stumble when changing direction.
Next, slam your outside foot firmly into the ground. This foot is your plant foot, acting like a brake and a spring at the exact same moment.
Finally, push off that plant foot with all your power and accelerate in your new direction.
Now you know how your feet moveβ€”but how can you trick the chaser before you even take that step?

Tricking the Chaser with a Fake

A fake is when you dip your head and shoulders to the left to make the tagger think you are going that way.
