Try touching your left shoulder with your right hand. That simple move just made both sides of your brain talk to each other!
The Body's Invisible Line
Imagine a straight zipper running from the top of your head, past your nose and belly button, all the way down to the floor between your feet.
This imaginary center line is called the midline, and it divides your body into a left side and a right side.
πInteractive diagram
Whenever your right hand or right foot reaches past that center line into the left side's territory, you are crossing the midline.
Why is crossing this line such a big deal for your brain?
The Brain Superhighway
Your brain has two halves called hemispheres. The left half controls the right side of your body, while the right half controls your left side.
Cross lateralization is the ability to coordinate both sides of your body together in criss-cross movements.
πInteractive diagram
Every time you cross the midline, signals zip across a thick nerve bridge in your brain called the corpus callosum, strengthening your brain's communication network.
So how does this brain bridge help you in everyday life?
