Scalars vs. Vectors
A scalar is a quantity fully described by just a single numerical value, known as its magnitude (or size), along with units.
A vector is a quantity that requires both a magnitude and a specific direction to be completely understood.
In the 1840s, Irish mathematician William Rowan Hamilton coined the word vectorβfrom the Latin word for "carrier"βto describe quantities that carry an object from one point to another.

Anatomy of a Vector
On paper, we represent a vector as a directed line segmentβan arrow connecting a starting point to an ending point.
The arrow starts at the initial point (the tail) and points toward the terminal point (the tip or arrowhead).
The arrow's length represents the vector's magnitude, while the way the arrowhead points shows its direction.
