Imagine tossing raisins, chocolate chips, and crunchy peanuts into a bowl. If you grab a handful, you can still clearly tell which piece is a raisin and which is a peanut.
That yummy snack is what scientists call a mixture β two or more substances physically jumbled together without forming a brand-new chemical substance.

Because the parts do not permanently lock together, every single ingredient keeps its own properties, like its color, taste, and shape.
Are mixtures only made of solid snacks, or can other states of matter join in?
Mixing the Three States of Matter
Matter comes in three main states: solids (hold their shape), liquids (flow and take the shape of their container), and gases (spread out to fill any space).
A mixture can be made from any combination of these three states.

A solid-solid mixture includes things like garden soil, sand with seashells, or a pencil case full of markers and erasers.
When you stir sand into water or spoon sugar into tea, you create a solid-liquid mixture.
What about the air invisible all around us β could that be a mixture too?
