Look at the wooden pencil on your desk, the cotton shirt you are wearing, and the glass of water you drink. Where did all of that stuff come from?
None of those things were made out of thin air. They all started as gifts from our planet!

What Is a Natural Resource?

A natural resource is anything found in nature that people can use. Earth makes these resources all on its own without any help from humans.
To study them easily, we sort Earth's resources into five big groups. What kinds of living resources do you see outside right now?

Plants and Animals

Plants give us wood to build houses, cotton for our soft clothes, and delicious fruits and vegetables to eat.
Animals provide us with warm wool for winter sweaters, milk, and eggs.
Living things cannot survive on their own. What do plants and animals need every single day to stay alive?

Water and Soil

Water fills our lakes, rivers, and oceans, giving people, animals, and crops the clean drink they need to live.
