How Sounds Make Waves
Every sound begins with a vibration, which is a quick back-and-forth movement. When you pluck a guitar string gently, it wiggles just a tiny bit.
The distance a vibrating object moves from its resting position is called its amplitude.

When you put more energy into a pluck, the string moves farther, creating a wave with a larger amplitude. Bigger waves carry more energy to your ears, which you hear as a louder volume.
How do scientists measure exactly how loud a sound is?
Measuring Sound in Decibels
We measure sound volume using a unit called decibels, which we write as dB.
This unit was named in honor of Alexander Graham Bell, the Scottish-American inventor who helped create the first practical telephone in 1876.
