Reach around to the middle of your back and feel that bumpy line of bones going all the way down. That is your spine, also called your backbone.
Scientists divide all animals on Earth into two huge groups based on one simple question: do they have a backbone inside their body or not?
Meet the Vertebrates
Any animal that has a backbone inside its body is called a vertebrate.
The backbone is made of small interlocking bones called vertebrae that protect the spinal cord and help the animal stand, run, or swim.

Meet the Invertebrates
Animals that do not have a backbone are called invertebrates.
Some invertebrates, like earthworms and jellyfish, are completely soft. Others, like crabs and beetles, wear a hard protective outer shell called an exoskeleton.
