You feel a bumpy ridge of small bones — that is your backbone, and it works like a sturdy central tent pole holding up your entire body.
What Is a Backbone?
A backbone is a flexible line of small, ring-shaped bones called vertebrae that runs from an animal's head down to its tail or lower back.

In 1801, the French scientist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck noticed that this single feature splits the entire animal kingdom into two giant teams: vertebrates and invertebrates.
Animals with a backbone are vertebrates, while animals without any backbone at all are invertebrates.
