If two brown-eyed parents have four children, why doesn't biology guarantee that exactly three will have brown eyes and one will have blue eyes?
In the 1860s, Austrian monk Gregor Mendel counted over 28,000 pea plants to prove that inheritance is not a random blend, but follows strict mathematical proportions.
To calculate these proportions, we first need to look at how alleles pair up during fertilization.
Alleles and Monohybrid Crosses
An allele is a specific version of a gene, represented by letters like T for tall or t for short. An organism's genotype is its genetic code (TT, Tt, or tt), while its phenotype is the physical trait you actually observe.
When both alleles are identical (TT or tt), the genotype is homozygous; when the two alleles differ (Tt), it is heterozygous.
πA clean, modern reference card showing Genotype vs Phenotype. Left box: 'Genotype' with three labeled badges: 'TT (Homozygous Dominant)', 'Tt (Heterozygous)', 'tt (Homozygous Recessive)'. Arrows point to Right box: 'Phenotype' showing two plant illustrations or green badges: 'Tall Plant' (pointing from both TT and Tt) and 'Short Plant' (pointing from tt). What happens when two heterozygous parents reproduce in a monohybrid cross (a breeding experiment tracking a single trait)?
Genotypic vs Phenotypic Ratios
A Punnett square maps out all four equally likely fertilization combinations by pairing one allele from each parent.
πAn interactive-looking Punnett square diagram for Tt x Tt. Top row has female gametes T and t. Left column has male gametes T and t. The 2x2 grid shows: Top-left: TT (Tall), Top-right: Tt (Tall), Bottom-left: Tt (Tall), Bottom-right: tt (Short). Below the grid, two summary cards: Card 1 'Genotypic Ratio' = '1 TT : 2 Tt : 1 tt'. Card 2 'Phenotypic Ratio' = '3 Tall : 1 Short'. Text color #1e2945, clean borders, bright highlight colors.
The genotypic ratio counts the exact genetic combinations (1TT:2Tt:1tt), while the phenotypic ratio groups them by visible traits (3Β Tall:1Β Short).
Always simplify ratios by dividing all parts by the smallest number. For example, a result of 600Β Tall:200Β Short simplifies to 3:1.
