Imagine you win a prize of 3,150 tickets at an arcade game, but your friend wins 2,980 tickets. Who has more tickets to spend?
To find out fast, we line up both numbers in a place value chart.
๐Interactive diagram
Which column should we look at first to see who won?
Look at the Greatest Place First
Always start on the far left with the greatest place value: the thousands column.
Since 3 thousands is greater than 2 thousands, 3,150 is immediately the larger number.
๐Interactive diagram
We write this using the greater than symbol: 3,150>2,980.
What happens if both numbers have the exact same digit in the thousands place?
When Thousands Are Tied
When the thousands match, step one spot to the right and compare the hundreds column.
