Imagine you are at the school book fair and want to buy a cool animal sticker for 35Β’. How can you look at a word problem and figure out if you have enough coins?
You do not need real coins in your pocket to solve it. You can draw quick coin sketches right on your paper!

Quick Coin Sketches

To draw a coin quickly, draw a simple circle and write its cent value inside.
A circle with 25 is a quarter (25Β’), 10 is a dime (10Β’), 5 is a nickel (5Β’), and 1 is a penny (1Β’).
What happens when a word problem asks us to put different coins together?

Adding Coins in a Story

Let's solve a story: Leo has 2 dimes and 3 pennies. His sister gives him 1 nickel. How much money does Leo have in all?
First, draw all the coins Leo has and receives. Then arrange them from the greatest value to the least value to count easily.
Counting is much easier when you start with the big values first: 10, 20... then add 5 to get 25... then count up by ones: 26, 27, 28Β’!
What if a story problem is about buying something and spending coins?
