Imagine having 30 loose marbles rolling all over your desk. Counting them one by one takes a long time!
What if you could lock them together into neat stacks to count them in just three seconds?

Making a Ten

A single small block is called a unit cube, and it has a value of 1.
When you snap 10 unit cubes together into a tall line, you build a ten rod.
One rod always holds 10 cubes, so 1 ten has the exact same value as 10 ones.
What happens when you have a whole handful of rods?

Counting by Tens

Instead of counting every tiny square, you can skip-count by tens!
Each new rod adds 10 more: 10, 20, 30, 40, and so on.
If you see 4 ten rods, count them out: 10, 20, 30, 40.
