Imagine you have a rope that is 6 feet long, and your friend has a rope that is 2 feet long. How do their lengths compare?
You could say your rope is 4 feet longer by subtracting. But you could also notice that your rope is exactly 3 times as long as your friend's rope.

Why do mathematicians prefer comparing with multiplication instead of just adding or subtracting?
Multiplicative Comparisons
A multiplicative comparison compares two quantities by asking how many times larger or smaller one amount is than another using multiplication or division.
A ratio is the mathematical tool we use to show this comparison, written as 6:2, 6Β toΒ 2, or 26β, which simplifies to 3:1.

Comparing the Same Attribute
An attribute is any measurable feature of an object, such as length, weight, capacity, or count.
To make a meaningful ratio comparison, both quantities must describe the same attribute, like comparing two lengths, two weights, or two counts of objects.
