Imagine your phone battery is sitting at 45%, or a giant game download says 82% complete. What do those percent numbers actually mean under the hood?
The word percent comes from the Latin per centum, which literally translates to "out of one hundred." Every single percentage is secretly just a fraction with a denominator (bottom number) of 100.

Whenever you see the percent sign (\$$%$),youcanreplaceitwithafractionbarover100$ without changing the value at all.
Have you ever wondered where that weird % symbol even came from?
The Percent Symbol
Over centuries, Italian merchants writing the phrase per cento scribbled it down into a short symbol: the slash represents the fraction bar, and the two circles represent the two zeros in 100!
Because the symbol means "divided by 100," converting any whole percentage into a fraction of 100 takes just one direct step: write the number on top and 100 on the bottom.

For instance, 7% becomes 1007β, and 63% becomes 10063β.
What happens when someone mentions a single-digit percentage like 5%βcould that be the same as 105β?
Avoiding the Single-Digit Trap
A common mistake is thinking 5% means 105β. Remember, the bottom number is always 100, so 5%=1005β, whereas 105β would actually be 50% (half the whole grid)!
