Imagine trying to eat an apple if your arm was one solid, unbending piece of bone. You would never be able to bend your arm to bring the food to your mouth!
A joint is simply the place in your skeleton where two or more bones meet. Different joints allow your body to move in different ways.
How do your arms and legs bend when you walk or climb stairs?
Hinge Joints
A hinge joint works just like the metal hinge on a door, allowing movement in only one direction: open and closed.
Your elbow and your knee are hinge joints. They let you bend and straighten your arms and legs, but they cannot rotate in full circles.

Ball-and-Socket Joints
A ball-and-socket joint is formed when the rounded end of one bone fits neatly inside the cup-shaped hollow of another bone.
Your shoulder and hip are ball-and-socket joints. Because the ball can swivel freely inside the cup, these joints give you the widest range of movement in your entire body.
