What would happen if you woke up tomorrow with zero bones inside your body? You would flop straight onto the floor like a giant blob of jelly!
Your skeleton is made of 206 hard bones that do three major jobs for you every second of the day.
1. Giving Shape and Support
Just like wooden beams hold up a house, your bones provide a sturdy internal frame called support that holds your body upright.
πA clean visual comparison side-by-side. On the left: a camping tent showing rigid poles supporting flexible fabric. On the right: a human body outline showing the upright skeleton holding up muscles and skin. Clear label 'Support & Shape' with an arrow pointing to the spine and leg bones. Light theme with #f8fafc background, #1e2945 text, soft blue accents (#22b7ff), and rounded cards.
Without this rigid framework, your muscles, skin, and organs would have nothing to hold onto, making standing or sitting impossible.
Holding us up is important, but what keeps our soft, squishy organs safe when we bump into something?
2. Protecting Delicate Organs
Your skeleton acts like a suit of built-in armor that provides protection to your most delicate internal organs.
πInteractive 3-part shield diagram showing human bone protection. Card 1: Skull bone enclosing a soft brain (label: 'Skull protects Brain'). Card 2: Rib cage surrounding a beating heart and pair of lungs (label: 'Rib Cage protects Heart & Lungs'). Card 3: Backbone (spine) surrounding the spinal cord (label: 'Spine protects Spinal Cord'). Little glowing shield badges next to each bone group. Clean light UI, responsive width.
Your hard skull shields your brain, your rib cage wraps around your heart and lungs, and your backbone guards your spinal cord.
Having strong armor is great, but how do we run, throw a ball, or dance?
