When you bite into a crunchy apple or run around on the playground, where did that power inside your body actually come from?
If you follow that energy backward step by step, it all started ninety-three million miles away in outer space!
Catching the Sunlight
Plants are known as producers because they make their own food instead of eating other living things.
They use green leaves like tiny solar panels to trap light energy from the Sun and turn it into stored food energy in a process called photosynthesis.

So plants capture energy straight from the Sun, but how does that energy reach animals that cannot do photosynthesis?
Moving Along the Food Chain
A food chain shows the path of energy as it moves from the Sun to plants, and then from one living thing to another.
Every arrow in a food chain points in the direction the energy travels โ from the food being eaten into the creature doing the eating.

What about fierce hunters like hawks or lions that never eat plants โ do they still depend on the Sun?
