Sunlight Powers the Green World
Plants are called producers because they make their own food rather than hunting or eating other living things.
A plant's green leaves act like tiny solar panels, trapping sunlight to turn water and air into sweet sugars packed with energy.

Many people think plants eat soil like food, but soil only supplies water and minerals. All the real fuel and energy inside a plant comes from trapped sunlight.
Plants store this solar energy inside their stems, leaves, and seeds. But how does that energy travel into animals?
Energy Moves Down the Chain
A food chain shows the path energy takes as one living thing eats another in an ecosystem.

When a grasshopper chomps on grass, it absorbs the solar energy stored in the plant. When a bird eats the grasshopper, that exact same solar energy gets passed along again.
