The Physical Armor
The outermost region of your skin is the epidermis, an impermeable wall made of tightly packed cells. As new cells grow from the base, older cells move upward and undergo keratinization, filling up with a tough, water-resistant protein called keratin before dying.

Because these dead surface cells constantly flake off in a process called desquamation, any pathogen clinging to your skin is shed away before it can penetrate deeper tissue.

The Chemical Shield
Embedded in your skin are sebaceous glands, tiny glands connected to hair follicles that secrete an oily mixture called sebum directly onto the surface.
Sebum contains antimicrobial fatty acids and, together with lactic acid from sweat, lowers the skin's surface pH to between 4.5 and 5.5βcreating a slightly acidic layer known as the acid mantle.

Most disease-causing bacteria thrive best in neutral conditions (extpH7.0β7.4), so this acidic film denatures their outer enzymes and prevents them from colonizing.
A common misconception is that washing your skin with harsh alkaline soaps makes it cleaner and safer. In reality, alkaline products temporarily strip the acidic sebum, weakening your chemical defense against invading microbes.
