The Cohesive Mix Bus
The mix bus (or stereo master bus) is the final stereo channel where all your individual tracks โ drums, bass, guitars, synths, and vocals โ combine into a single stereo output.
When you compress this master channel, the loud peaks of the drums and vocals momentarily squeeze down the volume of the entire mix together, creating a shared physical interaction known as cohesion.

How do we compress an entire song without squashing the life out of the drums or causing annoying volume pumping?
The Golden Starting Formula
In the 1980s, Solid State Logic (SSL) introduced the G-Series console compressor, establishing a timeless mix bus recipe: a 2:1 ratio, a 30 ms attack, and a 100 ms release.
A 2:1 ratio applies gentle compression where every 2 dB of audio exceeding the threshold outputs only 1 dB, ensuring transparent dynamic control rather than aggressive leveling.
A 30 ms attack time is intentionally slow, allowing the initial punchy transient spikes of snare drums and kick clicks to pass through unaffected before compression begins.
A 100 ms release time (or fast Auto release) lets the compressor recover quickly between drum hits, making the track 'breathe' in sync with the song's tempo.
