How can we find the new total in a flash using blocks?
Adding a Ten Rod
A tens rod is a tall stick made of 10 small cubes, and a ones cube is just 1 single cube.
When we add 10 to any number, we just slide in one more tens rod.

Look at the number 34 turning into 44: only the tens digit changed from 3 to 4.
