If you blew up an atom to the size of a giant football stadium, the nucleus would be a tiny marble sitting on the 50-yard line, while the electrons would be like gnats buzzing around the upper bleachers.
Despite being nearly empty space, all physical matter in the universe is built from just three fundamental subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons.
Where do these three particles live, and what holds this entire structure together?
The Anatomy of an Atom
Every atom is organized into two distinct zones: a dense, central nucleus and a vast surrounding region called the electron cloud.

How do these particles compare when we weigh them and measure their electrical charges?
Particle Charges and Relative Masses
Because subatomic particles are unimaginably small, chemists measure their mass using the atomic mass unit (amu), defined as exactly 121โ the mass of a single carbon-12 atom.
Protons have a +1 charge and a mass of 1ย amu, while neutrons are neutral with a charge of 0 and a nearly identical mass of 1ย amu.
Electrons carry a โ1 charge, but their mass is only about 18361โย amuโso light that it is considered virtually negligible when determining total atomic mass.
