The Universal Stages of Production
Every manufacturing system follows a linear pipeline divided into pre-production, production processing, and post-production.
In pre-production, engineers handle material procurement, CAD/CAM toolpath programming, and jig or mould preparation before physical production begins.

Primary processing (like casting, forming, or moulding) creates the initial part geometry, followed by Secondary Processing (such as CNC material removal) and joining via welding, mechanical fasteners, or adhesive bonding.
Post-production applies Surface Finishing (such as anodising, powder coating, electroplating, or polishing), followed by quality inspection, packaging, and logistics.
What happens when you only need to manufacture exactly one unique unit?
One-Off Production (Jobbing)
One-off production focuses on bespoke, single-item manufacture tailored to unique client specifications, such as an architectural model, a custom yacht hull, or a specialized surgical implant.
Because setup costs cannot be spread over multiple units, tooling relies on temporary jigs or highly adaptable general-purpose machines like 5-axis CNC mills rather than dedicated injection molds.
