If you roll a toy car down a tiny ramp, it rolls a short distance โ but what happens when you make that ramp steeper and steeper?
Scientists run experiments just like this to spot clues called patterns, which tell us how two things are connected.
In any experiment, a variable is simply any factor that you can change, measure, or keep the same.

When we change one variable, what happens to our measurements? Let's check our first big pattern.
Pattern 1: Moving Up Together
When increasing one variable makes the other variable increase too, we call this a positive relationship.
For example, as the number of hours a seedling spends in the sun goes up, the height of the plant goes up too.

Both numbers climb together like climbing a staircase. But what happens when one number goes up while the other drops?
Pattern 2: One Goes Up, One Goes Down
When increasing one variable makes the other variable decrease, we call this a negative relationship.
Think about melting ice: as the room temperature gets hotter (goes up), the time it takes for an ice cube to melt gets shorter (goes down).
