A radical is **isolated** when it stands completely alone on one side of the equals sign, with no other terms added, subtracted, or multiplied outside of it.

So why does squaring both sides unlock the variable inside?

The square root asks 'what non-negative number multiplied by itself gives this radicand?', so raising a square root to the power of $2$ simply returns the radicand: $(\sqrt{A})^2 = A$ for any $A \ge 0$.

To keep the equation balanced, whenever you square one side, you must square the entire other side as well.

Let's walk through a complete problem from start to finish.

Because the radical is already isolated on the left, square both sides: $(\sqrt{3x + 4})^2 = 5^2$, which simplifies directly to $3x + 4 = 25$.

Subtract $4$ from both sides to get $3x = 21$, then divide by $3$ to find $x = 7$.

Substitute $x = 7$ back into the original expression: $\sqrt{3(7) + 4} = \sqrt{25} = 5$, which matches the original equation perfectly.

What happens when an algebraic step produces a solution that doesn't actually work?

By definition, the principal square root symbol $\sqrt{\phantom{x}}$ can never produce a negative number.

Consider the equation $\sqrt{x + 6} = -3$. If you square both sides, you get $x + 6 = 9$, which leads to $x = 3$.

When you test $x = 3$, you get $\sqrt{3 + 6} = \sqrt{9} = 3$, not $-3$. We call $x = 3$ an **extraneous solution** — a false answer created by squaring.
