If a rectangular mosaic tile measures 43βΒ inch wide and 32βΒ inch tall, how much surface does it actually cover? You might think working with fractions gets messy, but a simple grid reveals exactly what is happening.
Area with Proper Fractions
Area is the amount of two-dimensional space inside a flat shape, measured in square units. For any rectangle, you find this space using the formula Area=lengthΓwidth (or A=lβ
w).

Multiplying Mixed Numbers
A mixed number combines a whole number and a fraction, such as 221β. Before calculating area, convert each mixed number into an improper fraction, which is a fraction where the top number is greater than or equal to the bottom number.
To convert 221β, multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator: (2Γ2)+1=5, giving 25β. Imagine a rectangular garden bed that is 221βΒ yards long and 143βΒ yards wide.
