If you stir a spoonful of sugar into a glass of warm water, the white grains seem to vanish into thin air! But if you stir a spoonful of playground sand into water, the sand grains swirl around and sink right back to the bottom.
Why does one substance disappear while the other stays completely visible?
Soluble vs. Insoluble
When a solid mixes completely into a liquid so it can no longer be seen, we say it dissolves.
A material that dissolves in water is soluble, while a material that cannot dissolve in water is insoluble.

How can we run a fair science experiment to test common kitchen ingredients?
Testing Household Substances
To keep our test fair, we put the exact same amount of room-temperature water in each cup, add one teaspoon of each substance, and stir each one for 30 seconds.
Here is what happens when we test four common household items:
