If you type 72β into a calculator, you get 8.48528137... β an endless decimal that is impossible to write down completely. But in calculus and coordinate geometry, rounding destroys precision, so we write roots in exact radical form instead.
A surd is an exact root of a rational number that cannot be written as a clean fraction or integer, such as 2β or 35β.
The word comes from the Latin surdus (meaning "deaf" or "mute"), translated in medieval Arabic and Latin texts to describe numbers whose exact values could not be expressed as a ratio of whole numbers.
Anatomy of a Radical
Before we pull factors out of a root, let's establish the four parts of any radical expression.
The radicand is the value inside the symbol, the index is the degree of the root (defaulting to 2 for square roots), and the coefficient is the multiplier out front.
πCreate a clean, responsive educational card (width 100%, max 450px) breaking down the anatomy of a radical: 'c Β· βΏβx'. Label the index 'n' in emerald green, the radical symbol in slate-blue, the radicand 'x' in deep orange, and the coefficient 'c' in purple. Add interactive chips/tooltips below that highlight each part on hover or tap with concise definitions: Coefficient (multiplier outside), Index (order of root, e.g. 2 for square, 3 for cube), Radicand (expression under the radical), and Radical Symbol. Use card background #ffffff, border #e2e8f0, text #1e293b, rounded-xl styling.
How do we split a single giant radicand into smaller, simpler pieces?
The Product Rule of Radicals
The Product Rule of Radicals states that the root of a product equals the product of the individual roots: naβ
bβ=naββ
nbβ for non-negative real values.
This rule works because radicals are fractional powers: (ab)1/n=a1/nβ
b1/n, so distributing the radical across a product follows directly from the laws of exponents.
πCreate an interactive visual proof showing why β(36 Β· 2) = β36 Β· β2 = 6β2. Display a rectangular area model partitioned into a 6x6 perfect square block colored vibrant blue (labeled '36 = 6Β²') and a remaining factor of 2 colored soft amber. Show a step-by-step slider or toggle: Step 1: β(72) (Entire Surd), Step 2: β(36 Β· 2) (Find Largest Perfect Square), Step 3: β36 Β· β2 (Split), Step 4: 6β2 (Mixed Surd). Use crisp typography, light theme (#ffffff card, #f1f5f9 container, #0f172a text).
An entire surd has all values under the radical (like 72β), whereas a mixed surd has an extracted integer coefficient (like 62β).
