Imagine you drop a handful of shiny marbles into a sandbox. How could you separate all those marbles from the sand in just five seconds?
Picking them out one by one takes way too long, but scientists have a simple trick based on size.
What Is Sieving?
A mixture is a combination of two or more materials that are mixed together but not chemically joined. Sieving is a method used to separate dry solids of different sizes using a tool with holes.

How does the sieve know which pieces to let through and which pieces to hold back?
Mesh and Particle Size
Every solid object is made of pieces called particles. The hole size in a woven wire screen is called the mesh gauge.
If a particle is smaller than the mesh holes, gravity pulls it through; if the particle is larger than the holes, it stays trapped on top.
