Holding On Tight
A plant's roots act like heavy-duty anchors that grip the soil tightly to provide anchorage, which keeps the plant from tipping over or blowing away.
Different plants use different root shapes to stay grounded: some use one thick main root called a taproot, while others spread out a web of fibrous roots.

Drinking from the Soil
Roots absorb water from the ground, along with mineral ions, which are tiny dissolved nutrient particles like nitrogen and potassium that plants need to grow strong and healthy.
To soak up as much liquid as possible, roots are covered in millions of microscopic fingers called root hairs that reach into every tiny gap between soil grains.
