How do these two groups actually handle dead organic material differently?
Detritivores: The Mechanical Shredders
A detritivore is an invertebrate animal—such as an earthworm, woodlouse, or millipede—that physically ingests dead particulate matter called detritus.
Detritivores rely on internal digestion: they chew, swallow, and mechanically grind tough materials like lignin and cellulose, excreting fine fecal pellets with a massively increased surface area:volume ratio.
What happens once the tough organic material is shredded into tiny pieces?
Saprotrophs: The Chemical Recyclers
Saprotrophs are microorganisms—primarily bacteria and fungi—that feed by secreting digestive enzymes directly onto dead matter outside their bodies.
This process is called extracellular digestion: secreted enzymes break insoluble polymers like proteins and starch into soluble monomers like amino acids and glucose, which the saprotroph absorbs across its cell membrane.
